A Complete Guide to the Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution began in the 1700s in England where the infrastructure had become established and economically strong. The English were already established in textiles and had a healthy textile market. It was only a matter of time before science
and technology to improve their existing methods faster and more efficient. England had supplies of iron and coal, along with the manpower to put them into production. The nearby waterways allowed them to transport what was needed from different regions and import goods. The steam engine had been invented in 1698 and began to play a part in moving assembly.
The Industrial Revolution reached North America in the early to mid-1800s, changing the course of American history. Before the revolution, most people worked out of their homes or in small, privately owned shops, once the Industrial Revolution was in full swing manufacturing took people from the workshop to the factory, including children as young as four or five years of age. New machinery was able to produce consumer goods quickly, but with unsafe work conditions, long hours, and a mistreated workforce, accidents were common. The workforce continued to grow as people abandoned the agricultural life in search of more work in the newly established factories.
Advancements were made in the fields of textile manufacturing, agricultural machinery, and coal mining. Transportation also played a major part in the evolution of the Industrial Revolution. As mentioned above, waterways helped transport what was needed from place to place. It made for cheap transportation and before long rivers were deepened and canals built to bring goods even further inland. In America, it was no different and in 1807, Robert Fulton built the first steamboat that was commercially successful. Within fifty years, steam engines were powering boats across the Atlantic and back as well.
Bank loans allowed manufacturing companies to buy new equipment and in turn make more money, but it was the industrial capitalists who were backing the factories and made them what they were, they were also the individuals that kept banks in business. As the factories grew, so did the banking system.
